Baby Camel Born at Lincoln Park Zoo

The birth marked the first calf born at the zoo since 1998.

CHICAGO, IL - A baby Bactrian camel calf was born at Lincoln Park Zoo this month, marking the first calf birth at the zoo since 1998.

The male baby was born in the zoo’s Antelope Zebra Area on May 9, according to a zoo news release. He joins his 7-year-old mother Nasan and 6-year-old father Scooter along with two other adult female camels on exhibit.

The baby stands 4 feet tall and weighed 81 pounds at birth.

“We’re ecstatic to welcome a Bactrian camel calf to the zoo,” Lincoln Park Zoo Curator Diane Mulkerin said. “He is still a bit wobbly on his feet but remains quite strong and is ready to begin meeting the rest of the herd.”
