Baby Zebra Born at Lincoln Park Zoo

Grevy's zebra foal found at Lincoln Park Zoo over Father's Day weekend.

Chicago, IL - A zebra foal was born at Lincoln Park Zoo on Saturday, marking the first zebra birth at the zoo since 2012.

Staff at the zoo found the newborn Grevy’s zebra foal with mom at the Antelope & Zebra area Saturday morning around 7 a.m.

The newborn, still unnamed, is the first offspring of mother, Adia, since 2012. A male named Kito was born to her that year. He still resides there in an adjacent yard. This is the first offspring for 5-year-old Webster, the dad.

“Caregivers, zoo vets and endocrinologists had been monitoring the mare’s pregnancy and were prepared to care for the new arrival,” according to a statement from the zoo.

“We’re thrilled to welcome this new foal to Lincoln Park Zoo,” Curator Diane Mulkerin said. “Like all the animals in our care, zebras play an important role in educating our guests about wildlife.”
