Hazardous Beaches, Dangerous Swimming Conditions Through Friday

The National Weather Service is warning beach-goers to stay out of the water through Friday because of strong rip currents and high waves.

Anyone hitting Chicago’s beaches before Friday better stay out of the water, because the National Weather Service has issued a new statement about the hazardous conditions.

The “Beach Hazards Statement” is in effect from late Wednesday through late Thursday night, citing “high wave action,” “strong rip currents,” and “strong structural currents.”

According to the NWS, a cold front is expected to drop across Chicago overnight with winds as high as 20 mph. The strong gusts could have waves grow upwards of six feet.

Thursday’s high temperature is predicted to be 70 degrees, while Friday will be back up to 78.

Residents should especially stay away from swimming near piers, sandbars or breakwalls where currents are expected to be strongest.
