Lincoln Park Resident Raises Awareness about Prostate Cancer
24 year old goes the extra mile for others

Lincoln Park resident Jack Porter, 24, is working hard to raise awareness about prostate cancer, the disease that his grandfather died from. Although he just moved here in July, Porter has already volunteered to participate in the SEA Blue 2020 Prostate Cancer National, Virtual Run, Walk and More on September 13, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. He's created a team and his fundraising has already raised $2700 for the event, which benefits Us TOO International, a nonprofit which offers free programs and services to families affected by prostate cancer. The live-streaming SEA Blue event is in lieu of this year’s SEA Blue Prostate Cancer Walk and Run, the largest and longest-running event in Chicago to raise funds and awareness for those affected with prostate cancer. Traditionally held in Lincoln Park, the event has been restructured this year to provide Support, Education, Awareness and Advocacy (the SEA in SEA Blue) to the prostate cancer community while complying with Covid-19 restrictions.
“We are doing our best to make this year’s SEA Blue event feel as close as possible to the rich experience found at the in-person event, with many of the same activities - including the walk, run, teams, fundraising, entertainment, information and more,” said Beau Stubblefield-Tave, executive director of Us TOO International.
As in years past, participants are encouraged to form teams but this year teams will be providing video clips for the virtual event taking place on September 13. The live web event will include a variety of educational presentations and entertainment. A small, in-person, invite-only component will be held as part of the event broadcast hub at Hofbrauhaus in Rosemont, IL. SEA Blue will once again be emceed by prostate cancer survivor and former WGN TV news anchor, Steve Sanders. The virtual nature will allow SEA Blue to connect to a national audience for the first time, for potentially the largest audience in the event’s history.

Registration for this year’s event is PAY WHAT YOU CAN, but donations and fundraising are encouraged. “We know everyone is experiencing effects from COVID-19, whether they be physical, emotional or financial. With this in mind we are making this year’s event ‘pay what you can,’ because we don’t want to prevent anyone from joining us for this positive, empowering and educational experience, but we do want to encourage donations and fundraising which will help Us TOO continue its work helping those with prostate cancer,” Stubblefield-Tave said. Registration is required to view the live stream. Registrants will receive a video link prior to the event for viewing.
