Lincoln Park Zoo Program Aims to Benefit Chimpanzees

The Chicago zoo has partnered with Chimp Haven in Louisiana for research.

CHICAGO, IL - Lincoln Park Zoo has entered into a partnership with a goal to benefit chimpanzees in human care.

The zoo and Chimp Haven are in collaboration to create the world's first accredited zoo-sanctuary partnership, according to a news release. The two will combine ideas and resources to promote the best care for chimpanzees thanks to a three-year grant from the Arcus Foundation.

“In a world where chimpanzees face a multitude of challenges, it is critical we do everything in our power to learn about these animals and how to best care for and conserve them,” said Stephen Ross, the zoo's director of the Lester E. Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes.

The zoo will staff a full-time research scientist at Chimp Haven in Louisiana to study the chimpanzees’ behavior and social relationships. Lincoln Park Zoo and Chimp Haven will also work together to evaluate and enhance education programs.

“We’re thrilled to work more formally with Lincoln Park Zoo and to continue to care for chimpanzees both now and in the future,” said Chimp Haven President and CEO Cathy Willis Spraetz. “This research will give us new insights on how to continually promote chimpanzee welfare and provide optimal care.”
