CHICAGO — PAWS Chicago is hosting its 22nd annual Angels with Tails Gold Coast Adoption Event. The organization is working with five other shelters and rescue organizations to feature more than 100 homeless pets up for adoption.

Angels with Tails will be held on Sunday, May 19, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. More than three dozen stores — along Oak Street, Rush Street, Delaware Place and Walton Street — will also be participating in the adoption event, offering their storefronts to showcase the pets.

PAWS Chicago launched Angels with Tails in 1998 as Chicago’s first large-scale pet adoption event. The event showcased homeless pets on sidewalks and storefronts along Michigan Avenue and Oak Street.

With the resulting media attention and community responsiveness, that inaugural event birthed Chicago’s No Kill movement, which has translated into lifesaving results, the organization said. The number of pets euthanized has decreased by nearly 90 percent, but there is still work to be done, the shelter said.
