CHICAGO — The 18th District will host a crime prevention workshop for the public in Lincoln Park on Feb. 5. The event will begin at 6 p.m. in the Lincoln Park Cultural Center, 2045 N. Lincoln Park West.

Gun arrests are up 55 percent in the 18th District and carjackings have been cut in half from 2017, Ald. Michele Smith said in a letter to residents.

"I am pleased to announce a breakthrough in our police district’s relationship with the State’s Attorney that should lower crime in our ward," the alderman's letter read.

"For the first time, the State's Attorney's office will have real-time, direct contact with the 18th District when arrests are made. This closer connection will impact the charges against offenders and bail decisions. Police can tell the State's Attorney who these offenders are, what their history in the community has been, and any relevant information on past offenses."

The free workshop will focus on street safety and crime prevention awareness.
