Wow! House: Wrigley Mansion Back on the Market With a $7.15M Price Tag
Buying this 4-story, 9-bedroom mansion means buying — and living in — a beautiful piece of Chicago history.
CHICAGO, IL — Another historic Chicago residence joins the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Heller House on the housing market. The Theurer-Wrigley House — better known as the Wrigley Mansion — went back up for sale this week, listing at $7.15 million.
Built in 1896 and designed by Richard Schmidt, a near-contemporary of Wright, the nine-bedroom, 13,7005-square-foot, Italian Renaissance-style home was commissioned and originally owned by Schoenhofen Brewing Company owner Joseph Theurer. Chewing gum baron William Wrigley Jr. bought the property in 1911, but the family left the four-story residence empty during the Great Depression and in the years following that period. Like the Heller House, the Wrigley Mansion was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, and the city considered making it the mayor's official residence in 1984.
This decade has seen occasional appearances from the Wrigley Mansion on the Chicago house market. It was listed for $9.5 million in November of 2011, and then $8.695 million in November of 2014. During that period on the market, the mansion's asking price was drastically cut to $4.9 million, which, in hindsight, was a steal now that it's back up to nearly $7 million.
