CHICAGO — A 14-year-old boy is accused of attempted murder after two men were shot on a CTA Red Line platform in Uptown, police said. After the boy was released to his mother's custody with no electronic monitoring, he's scheduled to appear back in court Monday. His release sparked controversy, and Mayor Rahm Emanuel called out the judge who made the decision to release the teen.

Two men were shot on the Argyle CTA Red Line station platform at about 4 p.m. last Monday, police said. A 34-year-old man was shot multiple times in the back and abdomen, and a 41-year-old man was shot in the thigh.

Both shootings were targeted, police said.

The mayor said the boy should not have been released without an electronic monitor.

"He's 14 years old. It's his 16th arrest. He has more arrests than he has years. He shot somebody," Emanuel said. "A judge put him out on the street."

The Cook County State's Attorney's Office said the boy was held by police for more than 24 hours without being brought before a judicial officer, which is required by law. Police denied that claim, and said the boy was held for 21 hours and 44 minutes.

The state's attorney's office said it asked the court to place the teen on electronic monitoring, but the court denied that request.

The unnamed 14-year-old is facing two felony counts of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm, police said.
