Chalkboard's Clean Slate: Trading Dinner for Breakfast and Lunch
Chef Gilbert Langlois of Chalkboard near Lincoln and Montrose avenues is changing the look and name of his restaurant.

Sunday was the last day to see a menu scribbled in chalk at a Lincoln Avenue eatery.
Chalkboard, at 4343 N. Lincoln Ave., was home to an ever-changing menu written on slate. Famous for combinations like fried chicken and campaign, the restaurant earned Chicago Magazine’s top 20 list when it opened in 2007.
Almost 7 years later, chef and owner Gilbert Langlois is changing his restaurant to feature breakfast, lunch and brunch items instead of dinner. The new Homegrown Café will open in August after a renovation, according to Chalkboard’s Facebook page.

“We look forward to celebrating the end of one great era and the beginning of a new with you, our friends and beloved customers,” Langlois wrote. On Monday, a simple, “Thank you” message appeared.

The chef earned a love of food from his small farming town upbringing Mokena, Illinois. After watching his mother and grandmother in the kitchen, he pursued a career in the culinary industry.
