Old St. Patrick’s Church Siamsa na nGael

Old St. Patrick’s Church is kicking off the St. Patrick’s week in style as they host the 17th annual Siamsa na nGael Monday, March 11, 2013 at Chicago’s Symphony Center at 7:30 p.m.   This year’s program is titled, “Voices for Freedom.” The story begins with America’s beloved Frederick Douglass and brings to light how he modeled his actions after Irish liberator Daniel O’Connell – a relentless agitator for the rights of all marginalized peoples—slaves, women, children, the poor, and the uneducated.  Highlighting Frederick Douglass’s close association with President Lincoln, we learn how he actively engaged in recruiting fellow blacks, including his own sons, to serve in the United States military in the Civil War. We introduce the legendary Irish Brigade showcasing the Irish Legion that fought in the Civil War. They were formed at St. Patrick’s Church in Chicago.  The story follows them to their final return to St. Patrick’s at the war’s end.

This year we are thrilled to welcome as guest narrator Chicago Sun-Timescorrespondent and NBC 5 News political reporter Carol Marin. Marin will tell the story with the help of world-renowned musicians and dancers. Chicago’s own Irish DivaCatherine O’Connell, will share the stage with critically acclaimed vocalist RodrickDixon, Alfreda Burke, The Soul Children of Chicago, and young Kate Wild.  You will also enjoy the sounds of Old St. Patrick’s 100-voice Concert Choir, Metropolis Symphony Orchestra, a Piper, a dancer from the Chicago Human Rhythm Project and the World Champion Trinity Irish Dancers – sure to make for an extraordinarily unforgettable evening in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.

“St. Patrick’s Day is dear to us at Old St. Pat’s and we are honored to bring this magical Celtic Celebration to life on the Chicago Symphony Center stage, said Fr. Tom Hurley, Pastor of Old St. Patrick’s Church.  “There truly is no better way to kick off the Celtic season, then with Siamsa na nGael.”
