Former Chicago Police Sergeant Charged In Andersonville Bar Fight

Eric Elkins has been charged with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, police said.

CHICAGO — A former Chicago police sergeant has been charged with aggravated battery after a fight on the city's North Side last year. Three men were beaten outside a nightclub in Andersonville, police said.

Eric Elkins, 45, was off-duty at the @tmosphere Bar on Sept. 29 when he attacked the three men, according to police.

Giovanni Rodriguez, 34, was also charged with with aggravated battery.

Two of the men who were beaten, John Sherwood and his partner Tom Stacha, filed a lawsuit against Elkins about a month after the fight.

Sherwood suffered a leg fracture and other injuries that required surgery, and Stacha sustained serious facial injuries, their attorney Tim Cavanagh said. Sherwood and Stacha were taken to Weiss Memorial Hospital, then transferred to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

Elkins resigned earlier this year amid separate investigations into allegations of sexual abuse and battery involving a teenager at a family party.

Elkins and Rodriguez turned themselves in on Monday, and were scheduled to appear in court Tuesday, police said
