Frio Gelato To Open In Andersonville

The Argentine artisanal gelato shop will open its newest Chicago location in August on the North Side, owners said.

CHICAGO, IL — FRÍO Gelato has announced the opening of a new location in Andersonville, marking its third gelato shop in the Chicagoland area. The new shop will open its doors in August at 5152 N. Clark at the corner of Foster and Clark. The announcement comes on the heels of a new storefront in Evanston and the celebration of its first anniversary in Lake View.

Focusing on artisanal flavors and seasonal ingredients, husband-and-wife owners Sebastián and Karla Koziura, along with Sebastián’s cousin Enrique Schcolnik, have created popular Argentine-inspired flavors. The idea stemmed from the cousins’ upbringing in Buenos Aires, and when they failed to find anything like their favorite childhood treat in Chicago, FRÍO Gelato was born, the team said.

“We are thrilled to become part of the Andersonville community,” Koziura said. “As we continue to expand, we are looking for neighborhoods with a community focus that are committed to supporting small businesses, and Andersonville fits the bill perfectly."

Since its 2013 inception, the FRÍO Gelato team has created more than 30 house-made flavors and payed homage to Argentine classics such as Dulce de Leche, Sambayón (egg custard with marsala wine) and Malbec con Frutos Rojos (malbec wine with berries).

"With the growing dining scene, we look forward to becoming a culinary anchor and are confident that residents will quickly fall in love with FRÍO Gelato,” Koziura said.

Locally made from all-natural ingredients in an allergen-safe kitchen, FRÍO specializes in seasonally-rotating gelato and sorbet flavors, as well as specialty items including the Cucurucho (handcrafted waffle cone), Barquillo (handcrafted waffle bowl), Argentine Flight, Alfa-lato (Alfajor gelato sandwich) and Ahogado (gelato drowned in espresso).

The Andersonville location will open in mid-August, owners said.
