New Public Sculpture 'Phoenix Rising' Makes Debut In Uptown
The sculpture is made in part from salvaged materials from the North side community.

CHICAGO, IL — The new public sculpture Phoenix Rising is turning heads in Uptown. Created by local artist Lucy Silvinski, the sculpture is made in part from salvaged materials from the Uptown community. The new art sits at the southern gateway to the entertainment district.
"Last summer, my office opened on a Saturday morning for community members to drop off used bicycles and metal parts," Cappleman said. "All of those donated materials from 46th Ward residents are featured in the sculpture we see today. From the beginning of this project to the end, this has truly been a community endeavor."
In Greek mythology, a phoenix is a long-lived bird that is cyclically reborn from ashes.

"It's a symbol of looking forward to Uptown's future while also guarding its past, where it finds its true strength," Cappleman said.
You can view the new sculpture at the intersection of Montrose, Sheridan, and Broadway.
