Roaches Found at Barba Yianni During Two Inspections

See how your favorite businesses fared in Chicago Health Department inspections.

Patch examined inspection reports in Lincoln Square during September. Information has been compiled using publicly available data published to the website of the Chicago Department of Public Health's Food Protection Program.

Restaurants can pass, pass with conditions or fail using a standardized procedure. Establishments that pass don't have any critical or serious vocations. Those that receive 'pass with conditions' had serious violations, but the violations were corrected during the inspection.

Failed establishments had serious violations that weren't correctable during the inspection. A fail rating does not mean the business's license is automatically suspended.

All inspections are done on a routine canvass, unless otherwise noted.

Barba Yianni Taverna, 4761 N. Lincoln Ave.
Inspection date: Sept. 16, 17, 19
Results: Fail, Fail, Pass
Violations: It took an inspector three visits to pass this Greek restaurant. On the first, inspectors found more than 40 live roaches under and behind the sink, dish machine, prep table and on the door of the walk-in cooler. The restaurant needs to have a pest control company come out and keep a logbook of services.

Other violations included unlabeled food and “excessive” food debris and grease on all equipment, floors and walls behind the cooking equipment and prep tables. Ice scoops were improperly stored and inspectors noted a “strong sewer gas odor” emitting from the floor drain in the dishwashing area.

On the second visit, inspectors still found roaches on the hot holding unit, under the sink and on the walls, oven and cooler. Management didn’t properly cover food on the dry storage shelves and there was still excessive food debris and grease throughout the kitchen.

After pest control services visited the restaurant, inspectors returned and didn’t find any roaches. All other violations were corrected.
