Teen Killed In Armed Robbery Of Off-Duty Chicago Cop: Police

Police said a second teen is in custody.

CHICAGO — An off-duty Chicago police officer fatally shot a 16-year-old boy on Chicago's Northwest Side Thursday morning, authorities said. Police said the teen was trying to rob the officer at gunpoint, when shots were fired. A second teen is in custody, police said.

The officer was in his car in the 5800 block of North Talman Avenue around 2:23 a.m., when the two teens walked up and pulled out a gun, police said. They demanded the officer's wallet, and he gave it to them, according to police.

One of the teens then reached into the back of the car and found the officer's badge, police said.

There was a struggle and the 16-year-old was shot, police said. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released; however, police said the teen's father had reported him missing. The teen had also taken his father's gun, according to police.

The 17-year-old ran away and was taken into custody shortly after. He's been charged with one felony count of armed robbery with a firearm. He was also charged with two unrelated misdemeanor counts of theft of property under $500, police said.
