Lisle Police Department Asking For Community's Help To Make It A Safe School Year

Schools opened on Wednesday, August 17 and parents are preparing their students for the new academic year. The Lisle Police Department is reminding the community to make it a safe year for all and to remember that texting and talking on hand-held phones while driving is illegal. Be extra careful driving as students get used to their new routines.

The Lisle Police Department calls for a partnership among parents and their children during the new academic school year:

Students

• Children should tell a school official immediately if they hear someone talking about having a gun, or actually see them with the gun
• A teacher or trusted adult should be informed if a student is being bullied or threatened by another student
• All children need to learn safe routes traveling to and from school
• Children involved in after-school activities (i.e. clubs, committees, sports) are in safer environments than those who are not

Parents

• Spend time with your kids, attend their activities, or eat dinner together at least once a week
• Teach your kids how to reduce their risk of becoming a victim of crime
• Know where your children are, what they are doing, and whom they are with at all times
• You should always have a number to be able to reach them in case of an emergency
• Ask how their day was, and listen to their response. Help them learn non-violent ways to handle frustration, stress, anger, and conflict
• Become involved in their school activities
• Attend HSO meetings, field trips, parent / teacher conferences. Keep open communication with your child's teachers. If something is going on at home that you feel is serious enough to affect their schoolwork, maybe you should let their teachers know
