SEASPAR Helps Students Rethink Recreation
Highlands Middle School students participate in an ability awareness fair hosted by SEASPAR
Students were given a new point of view on the morning of January 17, when the South East Association for Special Parks And Recreation (SEASPAR) partnered with Highland Middle School of La Grange for an ability awareness fair.
Over 100 sixth-grade students from Highlands Middle School in La Grange attended an ability awareness fair hosted by the school administrators. The goal of an ability awareness fair is to teach school-aged children about physical and cognitive disabilities, the challenges associated, and to dispel false connotations.
Also, Highland Middle School students were allowed to experience the importance of adaptive sports and recreation through hands-on activities, including visual-impaired games, communication exercises, and wheelchair basketball.
“It’s important to teach children at a young age that a disability doesn’t disqualify one from an active lifestyle,” said SEASPAR Recreation Coordinator, Sioban Goddard. “Overcoming a challenge is part of the journey for any worthwhile.”
As part of SEASPAR’s mission to educate future generations’ ability awareness, fair such as this are imperative. Each year, SEASPAR hosts awareness fairs like this throughout schools, seminars, and community events within the 12 communities it serves.
