SJA Offers On-Line Religious Education Classes
St.Joan of Arc to host online religious education classes, for elementary school age students
(Lisle)- Many parents choose to supplement their child's academic education with an after-school Religious Education program. At St. Joan of Arc Catholic School in Lisle, Religious Education is offered to SJA and public school students in order to provide sacramental preparation for Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, changes have been developed for St. Joan's 2020-21 Religious Education program. "We sent surveys to our SJA families, and over 90% wanted the RE program to be offered online," explained Lauren Nelson, Assistant Director of Religious Education at St. Joan of Arc. "Academic classes will be in-person, five days a week, but it makes more sense for us to offer Religious Education online."
The online program will utilize various platforms to communicate with students. "Flip Grid is presented in a squares format, like the opening credits of The Brady Bunch," said Nelson. "Students can upload videos and communicate one-on-one with their teacher. Zoom is a live video conferencing platform where students can interact with each other and the instructor. Google Classroom allows for document sharing and secure messaging between students and teachers."
Students will participate on their own schedule, but will have assignments and deadlines to follow. "A great benefit of the online instruction delivery is that we won't be relying on volunteer instructors," added Nelson. "St. Joan's teachers will be leading the Religious Education classes."
Academic classes begin August 18th, but Religious Education classes begin in September. "We'll host a drive-through Materials Pick-Up Day on September 2nd from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m., where parents simply drive up and receive the materials their children will need," said Nelson. "The initial Zoom call with teachers will be September 16th."
