St. Joan of Arc Adapts to Shelter In Place Orders

St. Joan of Arc Adapts Instruction Techniques, Weekly Mass For Pandemic Crisis

With the shelter-at-home directive still in effect, St. Joan of Arc Catholic School and Church, with the benefit of online resources, has adapted instruction techniques and made weekly Mass available for the community.

"We'd been using Google Classroom for several months before the pandemic crisis, so many of our students were already proficient with it," explained Michelle Picchione, Interim Principal for St. Joan's. "Our teachers are working hard to bring the curriculum to the students so they can continue learning at home. Some teachers use Screencastify or Soapbox to teach a lesson, then follow up with activities posted in Google Classroom. Some use Zoom conferencing to review vocabulary or read the class a story. Pear Deck allows students to complete a teacher-created activity online while the teacher is instructing the class. Zoom and Pear Deck lessons are also available for asynchronous viewing."

SJA's third grade teachers are using Online Project-Based Learning to have students work together to plan a camping trip. "Student groups meet twice a week with teacher guidance to solve problems using math, reading, writing, and critical thinking," added Picchione. "This creative method allows students to practice valuable skills like budgeting, map reading, and meal planning, but also helps students connect since they're not together in school."
St. Joan's is also utilizing Facebook, Instagram, and Constant Contact to offer Covid-19 and Diocesan updates to parishioners, along with videotaped Masses, religious and school information, and how to reach out for assistance.
