St. Joan Offers Summer Book Club
Zoom book club offers students the chance to continue reading during the summer with a group..

(Lisle) -One way for children to improve their reading skills over the summer is to join a summer book club. The benefits of continuing to read during the summer months are tremendous, and will not only keep students' brains sharp, but the kids will be on track to pick up where they left off at the end of the last school year.
Cece Kenney, a fourth grade teacher at St. Joan of Arc Catholic School, is hosting a summer book club for students who will enter grades three through five in the fall. "We started the first session of our book club, which takes place on the Zoom video conferencing platform, on June 10th," she explained. "We have approximately 25 students participating, which is terrific! We'll start session II on July 8th and go through July 29th."
The summer book selections include The Wild Robot, Because of Mr. Terupt, and The Chocolate Touch. "I chose these books along with another teacher, Mrs. Barenbrugge, a reading specialist here at SJA," said Kenney. "We have three groups of students, and we based each selection on reading levels and books we personally enjoyed. The feedback has been very positive so far. The students really seem to be enjoying the books, and they're engaged in our discussions."
Each club meeting begins with a group summary, and much of the conversation flows from that. "We also gave the students some optional projects to complete," added Kenney.

"Some were STREAM (Science, Technology, Robotics, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) in nature, like making a robot or designing a garden from materials found in the home. Others were more academic, like tracking a character from the beginning to the end of the story."
According to Kenney, this type of book club is a terrific way to encourage summer reading for students. It also provides a wonderful shared reading experience and a sense of community during this unprecedented pandemic.
