Village Offers Tips For Spring Flood Prevention

Ensure that sump pumps and downspouts are working properly to prevent flood damage.

When spring arrives, regardless of whether it’s “official” or feels like spring, the eagerness to get out of the house and enjoy fresh air can be especially strong – particularly during these times.

While taking the opportunity to get out and enjoy increasing temperatures, homeowners are also encouraged to take the time for some easy steps to make sure their home is prepared for the spring. Spring rains can bring about flooding, which is the most common natural disaster in the United States. Here are some things to keep in mind as the spring flood season draws near.

  • Ensure that nearby storm water sewer grates are free of debris that may obstruct drainage. Rake any debris away and properly dispose of it.
  • Take a few minutes to make sure sump pumps are operating correctly and, if installed, that battery-powered back up pumps have good batteries installed.
  • Ensure that downspouts and sump discharge hoses are directed away from your house, which will relieve undue pressure on sump pumps. Please keep in mind that Village code requires discharge hoses to be a minimum 3’ from the property line.
  • Most insurance does not cover flood damage. Only flood insurance will cover the damage from floods. Speak with your insurance agent to learn more and remember flood insurance takes 30 days to take effect, so purchase now to protect your family!
  • Talk with your family and make an emergency plan for you and your pets. No matter the disaster, it’s always a good idea to have emergency supplies ready at home, at work, and in the car.
  • Never drive or walk through flooded streets. It only takes six inches of moving water to sweep a person off their feet (and not in the romantic way). Remember, if a street is flooded, turn around - don’t drown.

Floods can be costly. A few inches of water in a 1,000-square foot home could cost more than $10,000 in repairs and replacement of personal possessions. To learn more about flood insurance and how to protect your home, visit www.floodsmart.gov.
