Manhattan Chamber and Village Recognize Citizen and Business of the Year

Grand Prairie Animal Hospital is selected as Business of the Year and Jack Fitzgerald is recognized as Citizen of the Year.

This year the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce Board faced a difficult decision in selecting the Citizen and Business of the Year from many outstanding nominations. At the recent State of the Village Dinner, the Chamber and Village awards were presented to Jack Fitzgerald and Grand Prairie Animal Hospital.

Jack has served the community for many years not only as a public servant but also as a volunteer. He is Manhattan’s longest serving continuous mayor of 22 years from 1967-1989. During his tenure a sewer plant was added in addition to a new water tower and well. The Village Hall moved into 245 S. State St. The first Planning Commission was formed just to mention a few of the improvements that he initiated.

Jack has been a member of the Manhattan Fire Department for over 50 years. Much of that time was when the department was totally made up of volunteers. He also served as Deputy Fire Chief, a certified Fire Fighter III and Certified Paramedic for over thirty years. He has held various positions on the fire department executive board including Fire Chief from 1998 to 2006. For the past twenty-four years from 1993 to this year, he continues to serve the community as a member of the Manhattan Township Board.
