Manhattan Dental Care 11th Annual Candy Buy Back Event Nov. 5

Event will happen with new safety precautions

Even 2020 can’t stop the Manhattan Dental Care Annual Candy Buy Back Event. With new safety precautions in place, this important community event is going to happen again this year.

“This is an important event for the community. We wanted to find a way to bring it back for the 11th year safely so everyone can still participate,” said Laura Aversano, D.D.S., owner of Manhattan Dental Care. “We are moving the event to a covered area outside of the office to ensure social distancing so children and families will be able to donate their candy safely.”

The 11th Annual Candy Buy Back is Thursday, Nov. 5 from 2 to 6 p.m. outside of the Manhattan Dental Care office located at 175 S. State Street, in Manhattan. Everyone participating needs to wear a mask when dropping off the candy.

The event benefits both children and the military. Dr. Aversano pays the children a $1 a pound for donated candy, and then she matches each candy donation with a $1 donated to Operation Care Package (OCP). Plus, all the donated candy is shipped to military troops by OCP.

In addition to receiving $1 per pound of candy, all children who donate candy will be entered in a raffle for a $50 gift card. There is a limit of five entries per person and children must be accompanied by an adult.

Each year groups work together to donate candy and then use the funds to support community causes. Last year Cub Scout Pack 155 of Manhattan donated 584 pounds of candy during their drive for the Manhattan Food Pantry. Other groups that participated included The Blue Crew of Manhattan Junior High raising money for Wreaths Across America and The Daisy Troop 75732 raising money for the TLC Animal Shelter.

If you have a group that wants to donate, you must contact Manhattan Dental Care in advance at (815) 478-7788.

“Last year’s candy buyback was very successful with 1,394 pounds of candy collected for OCP. Plus, we made a matching donation of $1,394.00 to OCP along with 1,000 toothbrushes and toothpaste. The community is just great in supporting this event and we are hoping for another outstanding year,” Dr. Aversano said.
