Passenger Killed In Crash, Driver Charged With DUI: Cops

The car was traveling southbound on I-57 when it drove off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree.

WILL COUNTY, IL — The passenger in a car was killed and the driver charged with DUI after a crash Sunday on Interstate 57, Illinois State Police said. Police responded to the crash at 11:48 p.m. Sunday on I-57 southbound just south of Peotone Road.

The car was traveling southbound on I-57 when it drove off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree, police said. The driver, Rita Mullins, 32, of Chicago, was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Mullins was charged with DUI-alcohol, improper lane use, driving too fast for conditions and driving without insurance.

The passenger, Curby Howard, 46, of Blue Island, was airlifted to Christ Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Illinois State Police continue to investigate the crash.
