Sick of the hail and rainbow photos filling your Facebook feed? What about some of the interesting clouds hovering above the Chicago area after a round of storms Wednesday?
The bubbly ”mammatus” clouds are known for forming underneath large cumulus “anvil” storm clouds—you know, the ones that hammered us with heavy rains and hail. The clouds are formed by cool air sinking rapidly from the upper atmosphere.
