House Fire Spreads To Basement, Kitchen In Mokena: Fire District
The rapid detection and reporting of the fire by the homeowner was due to the working smoke detectors that were present in the home.

At 10:32 AM on February 19, 2020, the Mokena Fire Protection District responded to a report of a structure fire in the 9800 block of Giles Drive. When Initial responding crews arrived on the scene at 10:36 AM, they found the occupant of the single-family residence reporting a fire in the kitchen. Working smoke detectors alerted the occupant to the fire.

Further investigation revealed the fire began in the basement and spread to the kitchen. Within minutes of arrival, crews initiated fire suppression efforts. The fire was reported under control within 10 minutes after the first unit’s arrival.
Units from Mokena, Frankfort, Tinley Park, Homer Township, and Northwest Homer aided.
There were no injuries reported from the fire. Damage to the building was contained within a small portion of the kitchen area. The rapid detection and reporting of the fire by the occupant can be attributed to the working smoke detectors that were present in the building. The rapid detection, notification and emergency response allowed for the minimal spread of fire and limited damage and emphasizes the importance of having working smoke detectors.
The cause of the fire was accidental – electrical accessory.
