NAWS Secures Loan To Keep Operations Going

After closures due to the coronavirus, NAWS had created a GoFundMe in March in an effort to raise funds, and over $20,000 was raised.

MOKENA, IL — Since NAWS Humane Society of Illinois in Mokena had to close to the public in March, it has been in danger of closing permanently. The society has been able to continue adopting cats and dogs, and many of the animals are also with foster families.

NAWS had created a GoFundMe in March in an effort to raise funds, and over $20,000 was raised.

"Due to the overwhelming outpouring of love and support from the community, NAWS was able to get through March and April with a GoFundMe Campaign," Founder Stacy Gaskins told Patch.

The society has now secured a loan that will get the society through mid-June, Gaskins said, adding the society will then see how the crisis situation looks at that time.

Even with many businesses closed and a stay-at-home order in place, the society has continued adopting its animals. Gaskins said 100 cat/kitten and 30 dog adoptions have taken place.

This week's adoptable pet of the week from NAWS is Daphney, a 3-year-old female hound mix. Daphney is looking for a special home due to her special needs, the society said. She has been diagnosed with Addison's Disease, which is a hormonal disorder. Daphney needs daily medication, but can still live a full, happy live.

The society said she is a sweet girl who loves other dogs, and loves to go for walks. Daphney also knows several commands already and is treat-motivated so she will be easier to train. You email Stacy at stacy@nawsus.org with any questions or if you would like to set up an appointment with an adoption counselor to meet Daphney.

Gaskins said the GoFundMe campaign will still continue to help the society keep rescue operations going.
