Naperville Reports Noticeable Loss in Income from Phone Tax

More residents are dropping household landlines in favor of mobile phones.

Naperville is one of several area municipalities seeing a drop in telecommunications tax revenue due to fewer people keeping landline phones.

Between its two most recent full budget years, the city’s income fell by nearly 18 percent, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Other bigger municipalities feeling the loss include Aurora and Elgin.

Linda LaCloche, Naperville’s communications manager, said the city is monitoring the trends but revenue likely will keep declining unless the tax formula is re-evaluated by the state. According to the Tribune, smartphone data packages with texting and Internet are not subject to the municipal telecommunications tax.
