Veterans Day 2017: What's Open & What's Closed In Naperville

Find out how, where and when your town is celebrating Veterans Day.

NAPERVILLE, IL — Veterans Day is Saturday, Nov. 11. Events will be held across the suburbs to honor those who have served. Government offices will be closed on Friday in observance of the weekend holiday, but most schools will remain open.

What's Open? What's Closed for Veterans Day?

  • Banks: Most are closed. Call your bank if you're thinking of stopping by.
  • Post Offices: Closed
  • Federal Offices: Closed
  • Local Government Offices: Most Closed Friday
  • Trash Pickup: Normal
  • Most restaurants will be open, some will offer discount to active military personnel and veterans.

NAPERVILLE

A Veterans Day remembrance ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at Veterans Park on Gartner Avenue across the street from Grace United Methodist Church. The Naperville Municipal Band will perform patriotic music.

The public is invited to an annual Veterans Day social and dinner hosted by the Judd Kendall VFW Post 3873 and American Legion Post 43. The event begins with a social hour at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11, followed by dinner at 6 o’clock. A turkey dinner with all the trimmings will be prepared by “world famous” Kendall Cooks with desserts by “Chef” Lee Lindberg. Dinner will be in the banquet room at Judd Kendall VFW Post 3873, located at 908 W. Jackson Ave. Spokesperson Wayne Fischer says the event is “pretty much sold out,” but you can try your luck at the door.

U.S. Rep. Bill Foster (D-Naperville), will hold a Veterans Day town hall event at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Anyone in the community is welcome to join at the Goodwin Hall of Business at Benedictine University in Lisle. Foster’s 11th congressional district includes parts of Aurora and Naperville.

The Naperville Municipal Band will honor veterans in a patriotic concert Nov. 12 at the Wentz Concert Hall at North Central College. The show starts at 3 p.m. A guest speaker from Naperville Responds For Veterans will briefly address the audience. Naperville Responds assists veterans with home repairs, renovation and construction. The show is free, located at 171 E. Chicago Ave.

AURORA

The City of Aurora is putting on a Veterans Day Parade and ceremony Saturday. The parade steps off at the corner of Benton and Broadway at 10:15 a.m. and ends at the GAR Memorial Hall.

OSWEGO

A special exhibit at the Little White School Museum features military artifacts including uniforms, equipment used by soldiers from Oswego during World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Photographs of the soldiers are displayed on the museum's Wall of Honor. Hours are extended to 8 p.m. on Veterans Day. The exhibit opens at 10 a.m. at 72 Polk St. in Oswego. Admission is free, but donations will go to the Oswegoland Heritage Association.
