1 Dead, 1 Injured After Shooting Near Niles Apartment: Police

Cook County medical examiner's office identified the 18-year-old who was shot in the head outside of his apartment near Niles and Glenview.

MAINE TOWNSHIP, IL— An 18-year-old man is dead and an 18-year-old woman was seriously injured in a shooting outside an apartment building on Thursday evening, police said.

The shooting occurred around 4 p.m. in a parking lot of a building on the 9600 block of North Greenwood Avenue in unincorporated Maine Township, officials from the Cook County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. The area is near both Niles and Glenview.

A gunman walked up to a car parked in a lot on the south side of the building and opened fire, striking both teens, police said. The man was shot in the head and later pronounced dead at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. The women sustained a gunshot wound to the arm and was also taken to Advocate Lutheran where she is listed in serious condition.

Erik Esquivel, who lived in the nearby apartment building, was identified as the man who was killed, according to the medical examiner's office. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

Police said the gunman fled the scene in a tan Jeep Cherokee and had on a black knit cap.

Greenwood Avenue was closed to traffic between Milwaukee and Golf Road as police investigated. Images from the crime scene show police around a burgundy sedan that possibly belonged to Esquivel.
