The “Get Back in the Swing” event will include a free evaluation of your swing by prominent golf physical therapist Joe Estes, PT, DPT, CGFI. Estes is a Certified Golf Fitness Instructor. He will also discuss prevention exercises and how to keep your back in shape all-year round. Estes says prevention is important since research shows that 80 percent of golfers will experience back pain at some point in their lives.

Dr. Frank Phillips and Dr. Kern Singh, co-directors of the Minimally Invasive Spine Institute at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, will explain common swing-related back and spine ailments and treatment options. Dr. Phillips will also discuss his recent study, showing that 80 percent of all spine patients return to their former handicap or better after spinal fusion surgery.

The seminar is for golfers of all abilities, those with chronic or intermittent back issues and those who are interested in preventing back conditions. “Even minor adjustments to one’s swing and stance can insure a lifetime of successful golfing, which is the name of the game,” Suttie explains.

Suttie, who has taught golfers worldwide for more than 42 years, is also a back patient. After swinging the wrong way for a long time, Suttie had surgery to insert a six-inch steel rod and seven screws in his back. Now, with a PhD in biomechanics, Suttie has been helping golfers avoid the same mistakes.

Patients from all over the world come to see the spine physicians at Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush, which is ranked the No. 6 orthopedic group in the nation by US News & World Report. The physicians at MOR are team doctors for the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bulls and the Chicago Fire Soccer Club.

Athletico Physical Therapy provides the highest quality orthopedic rehabilitation services to communities, employers and athletes, with over 330 locations throughout nine states. Their services include physical and occupational/hand therapy, work rehabilitation, women’s health therapy, pediatric physical therapy, concussion management and athletic training.

The Chicago District Golf Association is one of the largest and oldest golf associations in the country, promoting amateur golf throughout the Chicago area.
