Armed Robbers Steal Cigarettes, Cash From Niles 7-Eleven: Police

The Oakton Street convenience store has been robbed at gunpoint twice in three weeks.

NILES, IL — Two men robbed a Niles convenience store at gunpoint Sunday, stealing cash and cigarettes, police said. It was the second armed robbery to be reported at the 7-Eleven at 7450 W. Oakton St. in less than a month.

Around 3:43 a.m., two robbers came up to the store clerk in front of the store while he was emptying garbage, according to Cmdr. Robert Tornabene. One of the two brandished a black pistol to the employee, and the other dragged him back into the store.

Once inside, the gunman and his accomplice grabbed about $100 in cash and about $100 in cigarettes, according to Tornabene. They ran away on foot, headed east on Oakton Street.

The man who pulled out the semi-automatic handgun was described as between 5 feet, 6 inches and 5 feet, 8 inches tall, dark-skinned and weighing between 140 and 150 pounds. At the time of the robbery, he was wearing a red hooded sweatshirt with a white zipper, a white mask, dark pants and dark shoes.

The man who dragged the clerk into the store was described as between 5 feet, 8 inches and 5 feet, 10 inches tall, dark-skinned and weighing between 150 and 160 pounds. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with the hood pulled over his head, dark jeans and Nike high-top shoes.

The store owner reported the robbery late on Monday morning, more than 24 hours after the incident, according to Tornabene. Anyone with information about the incident was asked to contact Detective Robert Vehlow at 847-588-6576.

The robbery comes three weeks after another armed robbery was reported at the Niles 7-Eleven at the corner of Oakton Street and Osceola Avenue. Police said around 7:45 p.m. on June 16, two men entered the store and one displayed a gun. The pair stole about $2,000 in cash, as well as cigarettes and lottery tickets in the incident. Investigators do not believe the same suspects were involved in both robberies, Tornabene said.
