The Niles-Maine District Library has been named one of the nation’s Star Libraries for the eighth time by Library Journal, a publication specializing in research and reporting for public libraries. The rating is based on a massive review of data from over 5,600 libraries across the country, of which only 262 were chosen for the coveted title of Star Library.

Libraries’ scores are determined by the specially-cultivated LJ Index, which mainly focuses on statistics for material circulation (including electronic materials such as ebooks), program attendance, in-person visits, and public Internet usage. The index was designed to measure a Library’s total output of resources relative to peer libraries, with institutions being grouped based on yearly expenditure. The Niles-Maine District Library is one of sixteen chosen libraries in Illinois.

Having held the title of Star Library from 2012-2018, the Niles-Maine District Library is no stranger to the process. However, the continued recognition is nevertheless appreciated. “During the pandemic, we have been made even more aware of how important the Library is to the people of the community, and we are so grateful that the excellent services, staff and collections are being recognized nationally,” said Executive Director, Susan Dove Lempke.
