NILES, IL — Police said a local man was arrested Tuesday after an abortive attempt to rob a pizza shop with a note.

Ashur E. Notali, 22, of the 7100 block of Niles Avenue, was charged with one count of attempted aggravated armed robbery, according to police.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m., Notali walked into the Little Caesers at 7201 Dempster St., and passed a note to a restaurant employee, police said.

The note demanded cash and claimed he had a gun, although Notali never brandished a firearm, according to a statement from Niles police.

Instead of handing over money, the restaurant employee kept the note and called the cops, and Notali took off running, police said.

Officers dispatched to the scene found Notali, who matched the description provided by the Little Caesers staffer, somewhere on Shermer Road. He was later identified by employees as the person who passed the note, according to police.
