MORTON GROVE, IL — The 100th anniversary of the "War to End All Wars" is Sunday. It has been a national holiday since Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Originally known as Armistice Day, Congress passed a resolution for an annual observance in 1926. President Eisenhower in 1954 signed an amendment renaming it Veterans Day and expand it to honor all veterans. This year it falls on Sunday, Nov. 11.
In Morton Grove, American Legion Post 134 hosts its annual Veteran’s Day Parad, scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Morton Grove American Legion Civic Center, 6140 Dempster St. The route heads south on Georgiana Avenue to Crain Street, east on Crain to School Street, south on School to Lincoln Avenue and west on Lincoln to the Morton Grove Public Library before stopping at the Doughboy statue in front of the library. A brief ceremony will feature remarks from veterans and local dignitaries, according to the village.
The parade will re-assemble after the ceremony and proceed north on Georgiana Avenue to the Civic Center. Contact American Legion Post No. 134 at 847-965-9503 for more information. All residents were encouraged to fly flags and remember the sacrifices of the nation's veterans.
