Craigslist Sale Goes Bad for Northbrook Man

Someone also scratched up a car and deflated its tires on Shermer, causing extensive damage.

Craigslist sale gone bad

The man reported that he posted a craigslist ad to sell his iPhone 5s worth $425. The offender contacted him and requested to meet at a parking lot in the 800 block of Waukegan at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 24. The victim reported that after a short conversation, he showed the offender the box containing the phone. At that point the offender grabbed the box and ran away.

Identity theft

Kiara L. Clark, 24, of the 600 block of 21st Avenue in Maywood, was arrested by Villa Park police on a Northbrook warrant for identity theft. According to the complainant, she opened a credit card account at a department store in the 1500 block of Lake Cook road using someone’s unauthorized identity and information. Officers identified her through surveillance photos and obtained an arrest warrant. She was released on $35,000 bond and given an Oct. 3 court date.

Identity theft

A resident received a letter she believed was from her employer containing an offer for free credit monitoring in reference to her company being the victim of a hacker. The woman contacted the company and provided the personal information requested. She soon began receiving voice mails from creditors telling her she had been approved for various loans totaling more than $40,000.

Car damaged

Someone damaged a Mercedes by scratching the trunk, hood and both doors in the 1400 block of Shermer Road that was reported Sept. 20. The tires were also deflated or slashed. Damage is estimated at $5,000.

Burglary

A resident returned to her home in the 800 block of Bach at 9 p.m. Sept. 20 to discover the house was burglarized. Officers found the front door had been forced open. The bedrooms and basement had been entered and jewelry was stolen.

Attempted burglary

Officers responding to the burglar alarm found the front door had been forced open on a home in the 2500 block of Greenwood at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 21. A witness reported seeing a black vehicle near the home and two subjects running towards Willow Road prior to the officers’ arrival. The investigation is ongoing.

Retail theft

Store security at a business in the 100 block of Skokie Highway observed Alicia Lewosz, 49, of the 8800 block of Western in Des Plaines, switch price tags on an iPad case valued at $148.75 with one valued at $44.10. She was taken into custody after paying for the lower priced item and leaving the store. She was charged with felony retail theft and transported to bond court.

Catalytic converters stolen

Someone stole the catalytic converter from a Ford F350 van sometime between Sept. 19 and 23 in the 1900 block of Shermer Road.

A business owner reported that three company vehicles had catalytic convertors stolen in the 1800 block of Raymond Drive. The vehicles, two Fords and a Toyota, were parked in the company lot overnight Sept. 24. The estimated cost to replace all three is nearly $1800.

Retail theft

Emma Soybel, 54, of the 5000 block of Marine Drive in Chicago, was seen by employees removing $122 in merchandise at a store in the 800 block of Willow Road at 12:45 p.m. Sept. 23. She was stopped after she left the store without paying, was charged with retail theft, released on $1,500 bond and given an Oct. 16 court date.
