The Flying Turtles, the North Suburban YMCA’s Special Olympics Swim Team, now in its 4th year, held its most successful swim meet yet on April 6 at the District competition at Lake Forest College. Now the largest team at the district meet with 33 swimmers, the team earned a total of 20 gold medals, 10 silver medals and one bronze medal. 12 swimmers have qualified for the Illinois State Summer games, which will take place the weekend of June 8th at Illinois State University.

“Our successes would not be possible without the continued support and enthusiasm from our families and swimmers, along with the support of our NSYMCA staff,” commented Tom March, the Head Coach of the Flying Turtles. “They continue to embrace our special needs members and families and make the NSYMCA the gold standard for special services on the North Shore.”

The North Suburban YMCA Flying Turtles swim team program for kids with special needs focuses on endurance, stroke mechanics, and technique while centering on the values of the YMCA: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
