Practice Pays Off For Varsity Spartans
Glenbrook North earned its second win in a row against Deerfield, which had its fifth loss in a row.
Glenbrook North's football players and coaches were all smiles after Friday's 44-7 win over Deerfield High School.
"I'm happy when they play well and I'm proud of them," GBN's head coach, Bob Pieper, said after the game. "I've been telling them all year, if they practice well they're going to play well. They practiced great this week. They really deserved this win."
The Spartans dominated the game with possession times and yards gained, and Pieper says they were prepared to play against Deerfield's offensive strategy.
"We've watched on their films, [Deerfield] does a very good job of keeping the ball away from you, they have long sustained drives," Pieper said. "On all of our drives, we went for it a couple times on fourth down, just to not give them the ball back."
GBN plays Niles North on Friday. Both teams are currently tied with a 3-3 record this season.
"Ever game is big, so we're going to continue to work hard and hopefully we'll get better," Pieper said.

For Deerfield, the absence of two key players proved costly on Friday night.
"We're missing a couple people after our last game from injury, our quarterback was out, our slot was out, it was kind of a domino effect,"
Deerfield High School Coach Steve Winiecki said.
The Warrior's Friday loss was significant, which Winiecki said could be improved by more focused playing on the field, and better leadership off the field.
"We didn't tackle very well on defense, we didn't hold onto the ball on offense," he said. "We all, the coaching staff, myself, the kids, we all have to do better."
"You turn the ball over four times and we don't get any turnovers, it's a recipe for a bad result," he added.
Deerfield is now 1-5 this season, and facing Maine West who has the same record, on Friday.
"We're going to focus on the seniors. With five losses, we kind of know what our fate is," Winiecki said. "We're going to coach them up, we're going to get them to play and we're going to get them to play better."
