Shermer Road Bridge Construction Complete In Northbrook

Village officials announced the bridge is ready to fully reopen in time for the holiday shopping season.

NORTHBROOK, IL — The Shermer Road bridge in downtown Northbrook is ready to reopen, the village announced. A ceremonial reopening event has been scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday. The bridge over the West Fork of the North Branch of the Chicago River, which leads functions as a gateway to Northbrook's central business district, has been closed since August for reconstruction.

The last three months of roadwork have included replacing the bridge's deck and sidewalks, resurfacing pavement on Shermer Road between Church Street and Waukegan Road and replacing the bridge's concrete beams. More than $1 million of the project, about 80 percent of its total cost, was covered by a grant from the Illinois Department of transportation, according to the village.

The village said the bridge reopening opening coincided with the start of the holiday shopping season and its "Live Shop Dine" campaign to promote local businesses.

Roadwork on the bridge is not quite complete. Final decorative elements in the spring 2019. The bridge will stay open to traffic throughout, but construction will require daily lane closures, according to the village.
