Skokie Biz Owners Rescue Woman, Daughter From Fiery Edens Crash

Ken's Diner co-owners were headed home to Buffalo Grove when they encountered the car crash near Tower Road in Northbrook.

 

Brothers Dan and Ken Hechtman, co-owners of Ken’s Diner in Skokie were headed home after a long workday when all hell broke loose in front of them on the Edens Expy. Sunday, Chicago Tribune reported.

Without thinking Dan, 54, ran toward the front of the truck and pulled a passenger out of the flaming semi while his older brother Ken, 60, ran toward the back of the truck planning to stop traffic but then heard voices coming from underneath the truck, Chicago Tribune reported. 

Ken says he heard women screaming, “I’m on fire! I’m on fire,” and saw Gloria Garcia, 39, and her 10-year-old daughter Gianna Hernandez on the concrete; Garcia’s hair, jacket and hands were in flames while her daughter was screaming, Chicago Sun-Times reported.

 Garcia’s sister, Maria Garcia, 27, said she’s thankful for the brothers and that doctors expected the mother, who suffered third-degree burns on her arms and second-degree burns on her face; and the daughter, who suffered third-degree burns on her hands and second-degree burns on her forehead, to recover, Chicago Sun-Times reported.
