Bed, Sheets Found in Restaurant Loft, Theater Fails Health Inspection

Health officials told the Northcenter restaurant owner to remove the makeshift bed. They also visited Mariano's, Wasabi and more in this week's health inspections.

Patch examined inspection reports in North Center. Information has been compiled using publicly available data published to the website of the Chicago Department of Public Health's Food Protection Program.

Restaurants and businesses can pass, pass with conditions or fail using a standardized procedure. Establishments that pass don't have any critical or serious violations.

Those that receive 'pass with conditions' had serious violations, but the violations were corrected during the inspection. Failed establishments had serious violations that weren't correctable during the inspection. A fail rating does not mean the business's license is automatically suspended. All inspections are done on a routine canvass, unless otherwise noted.

The Big Cheese on Lincoln

  • 4229 N. Lincoln Ave.
  • Pass with Conditions, then Pass

Inspectors had plenty to say when visiting The Big Cheese in Northcenter, so the restaurant only passed with a few conditions at first, and then fixed them and passed. Inspectors told owners they needed to remove odd items like a TV and washing machine from the basement, as well as all the litter and debris to prevent rodent harborage. But in regards to separating sleeping quarters from restaurants, inspectors found a “mattress and bedsheet in loft area with food” storage. That also needed to go.

Mariano’s Fresh Market

  • 3350 N. Western Ave.
  • Pass

The popular grocery store on Western had a few comments from health officials, mainly in regards to cleaning. They asked employees to remove the dust and grease by the hot foods section, remove the food debris by the deli counter and clean the floors in the bakery freezer.

Always Thai

  • 1825 W. Irving Park.
  • Pass

The Asian restaurant had few comments from health inspectors, including a request to label and date cooked food, clean the fans inside refrigerators and remove unnecessary articles from a prep table to prevent rodent harborage.

Mrs. Murphy’s and Son’s Irish Bistro

  • 3905 N. Lincoln Ave.
  • Pass

This Irish restaurant passed their inspection, but not before health officials told them to fix a leaky faucet, clean their grease traps and dust the fans in their coolers. That’s combined with a need to replace a broken thermometer in a refrigerator and “detail clean mineral build-up inside (the) ice machine.”

Constellation Theater and Bar

  • 3111 N. Western Ave.
  • Fail

While no serious citations were issued at Constellation, health officials racked up enough negative comments that they decided to fail the bar. Some of the comments included doors that weren’t rodent-proofed, as well as unfinished walls and floors that aren’t easily cleanable. IN addition, there was no mop sink on the premises, and the lack of “No Smoking” signs posted.

Wasabi Café

  • 2902 N. Lincoln Ave.
  • Pass

Health inspectors only gave Wasabi two areas to improve: First owners need to clean the fan inside a walk-in cooler, and second, they have to repair the water damaged ceiling tiles.
