Brookbank, who previously played for the Anaheim Ducks, was signed this past summer to a two-year deal with the Hawks. Since then, he's had plenty of time to house hunt.

The National Hockey League announced last week the cancellation of the 2012-13 regular-season schedule through Dec. 30, according to the league's website.

"The cancellations are necessary due to the absence of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL Players' Association and the NHL," it says.

A total of 526 regular-season games—42.8 percent of the season—were scheduled for October 11 through December 30.
