First Chemical-Free Spa Opens in Lincoln Square

The smell of acetone and formaldehyde won't be hanging in the air at the newest nail salon in Lincoln Square.

Noktivo Spa and Beauty Boutique will be the city's first green spa and boutique featuring only chemical-free products. 

Owner Jenny Duranski started as a nail technician and quickly realized the effects of toxins typically used in salons. 

"I developed a lot of sensitivities to the chemicals I used on a daily basis," she said. "I wanted to find a way to continue what I love doing."

So, Duranski turned to more organic products. She opened her own mobile spa, Head 2 Toe, and delivered manicures and pedicures to clients. 

Seven years after starting her traveling spa, she began looking for a permanent storefront.  Duranski hopes to open next week at 4831 N. Damen Ave.

The name, Noktivo, translates to nails in Macedonian, where her husband Dejan is from. 

Although nails are her specialty, Duranski will feature waxing, threading and in the future, up-dos for special occasions. 

Noktivo will also sell beauty products. From allergy-specific lotions to local creations, Duranski said she wants to include something for every skin type. 

"It's really, really important for women to know what's in their products—we use so many every day," she said. 

After the spa is up and running, Duranski plans to host DIY manicure and pedicure nights along with beauty bakery events.
