The Odyssey: An Epic Staged Reading

Join us for a staged reading of a new movement-based adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey, complete with heroes, gods and monsters.

Epic tales deserve epic storytelling. Join us for a staged reading of this new adaptation of Homer's "The Odyssey," which puts the classic story of heroes, gods and monsters within a framework of a movement-based telling.

The adaptation uses a chorus of actors to embody not just the human characters in the story, but the mythical ones as well as inanimate objects. This physical theater piece relies almost completely on the ensemble of actors telling the story.

This event will involve a reading of the full script with selected moments that are fully choreographed. The staged reading is directed by Shannon Ferrante and assisted directed by Alison Plott with original music by Erika Haaland and Jerry Ochoa.

The cast is: Andrew Rathgeber as Odysseus, Erika Hood as Penelope and Paul Czjkowski, Scott Dare, Sarah-Lucy Hill, Angela Horn, Roberto Johnson, Michaela Kelly, Lindsey Martin, Michelle Maurer, Andy Nagraj, Jillian Osborn, Kamron Palmer, Chad Patterson, Richie Schiraldi, Emily Terrell and featuring Andy Nagraj and Alison Plott as the Chorus.

"The Odyssey" centers on the Greek hero Odysseus and his 10-year journey home after the fall of Troy, as well as the political situation in his homeland of Ithaca during his 20-year absence.

"The Odyssey" is being developed independently by Maria Burnham, Carrie Campana, Miona Lee and Tim Lee, based on a concept by Campana. The reading is co-produced with Creative Wellness.

The reading takes place at 7:30 p.m. at the Vagabond School of the Arts (4001 N. Ravenswood Ave., Suite 504; Chicago, IL 60613). The event is free with a suggested donation of $5.
