Residents Warned to Stay Indoors During Mosquito Spraying

To fight the West Nile Virus, city workers will be spraying insecticide throughout parts of Ward 47 Thursday.

The spray is not harmful to pets or humans, according to a news release from the city, but residents are encouraged to stay indoors and close windows as an extra precaution. All homes in the spray zone will receive a notice on their doors before the extermination. 

Spraying will begin at dusk and continue until 1 a.m. 

“When West Nile Virus poses a threat to Chicagoans, it is our job to act swiftly to eliminate the threat and keep our residents healthy,” said CDPH Commissioner Bechara Choucair, M.D. in a news release. 

Only licensed mosquito technicians and the Chicago Department of Public Health will be spraying in an ultra-low volume spray.

The spray—known as Zenivex—will be spread at about 1.5 ounces per acre and is most deadly to adult mosquitoes. 

City workers will continue to collect from mosquito traps around the city for West Nile testing.

CDPH reminds residents to take precautions against mosquitoes that may carry the virus, including:

• Use insect repellent that contains DEET, Picaridin or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.

• Eliminate standing water. This includes emptying water from flowerpots, gutters, pool covers, pet water dishes and birdbaths regularly.

• Keep grass and weeds short to eliminate hiding places for adult mosquitoes.

• When outside between dusk and dawn, wear loose-fitting, light colored clothing including long pants, long sleeve shirts, socks and shoes.

• Check that all screens, windows and doors are tight-fitting and free of holes and tears

• Check on neighbors regularly who may need additional assistance, including the elderly.
