Restaurant Voted a Top-10 Neighborhood Favorite Fails Health Inspection

The popular spot in Roscoe Village has almost 500 reviews on Yelp, but that didn't mean much to the inspector. See the violations for that restaurant and more here on Patch.

Patch examined inspection reports in North Center. Information has been compiled using publicly available data published to the website of the Chicago Department of Public Health's Food Protection Program.

Restaurants and businesses can pass, pass with conditions or fail using a standardized procedure. Establishments that pass don't have any critical or serious violations.

Those that receive 'pass with conditions' had serious violations, but the violations were corrected during the inspection. Failed establishments had serious violations that weren't correctable during the inspection. A fail rating does not mean the business's license is automatically suspended. All inspections are done on a routine canvass, unless otherwise noted.

Beat Kitchen

  • 2100 W. Belmont Ave.
  • Pass
After initially failing its inspection when some “black, wet, moldy” substance was found in the ice machine, health crews swing by Beat Kitchen again to make sure everything was resolved. They passed the reinspection, fixing all the issues.

Mangi’s

  • 3801 N. Lincoln Ave.
  • Pass
Inspectors headed to Mangi’s on Lincoln after someone complained about the state of the fast food joint. However, health professionals only asked owners to clean the racks in the cooler and remove the cardboard boxes on the floors.

90 Miles Cuban Café

  • 3101 N. Clybourn Ave.
  • Fail
The Cuban restaurant, which made the neighborhood top 10 favorite restaurants list, failed when inspectors discovered nobody working at the time was a certified food manager. It's an issue considering they were preparing foods like chicken and Italian beef.

A serious citation was issued, leading to their failure. Inspectors also noted there was plumbers putty around a sink rather than replacing the broken fixture. That's combined with cleanliness issues and a missing thermometer in a heating case.

Stevos Grill

  • 2326 W. Belmont Ave.
  • Pass
Inspectors noted the restaurant didn’t have a detailed label and ingredient list on its packaged, ready-to-eat foods, which is a violation. That’s in combination with cleanliness issues and the fact some of the food handlers weren’t wearing hair nets.

Windy City Inn

  • 2257 W. Irving Park Rd.
  • Pass with Conditions
Similar to 90 Miles Cuban Café, a certified food manager wasn’t on site during the inspection leading to a serious citation. Inspectors also told owners to clean the floors in the entire restaurant, re-caulk around wash bowls and to get rid of the random items like pieces of wood and decorations in the basement.

Papa Johns

  • 3927 N. Lincoln Ave.
  • Pass
The pizza chain on Lincoln was asked to remove the clutter from a rear storage area to avoid harboring rodents. Owners were also told to elevate the soda machine for easy cleaning and to more easily monitor rodents.

Snappy’s Shrimp

  • 1901 W. Irving Park Rd.
  • Pass
The local restaurant almost passed with flying colors. Inspectors only asked owners to properly store wiping cloths in sanitizing solution, as well as replace a missing thermometer in a prep cooler.
