Customer License Plates Scanned At Oakbrook Center: Report
The mall says it scans license plates to make sure employees are parking in designated areas, but the system has led to privacy concerns.

OAK BROOK, IL — Customers at Oakbrook Center might not be aware that the mall's security monitors parking by scanning the license plates of cars in its lots. The mall has used license plate recognition to make sure employees don't take customer spots since 2016, Chicago Tribune reports.
Once the license plate is scanned, it is checked to see whether or not it matches any license plate numbers submitted by employees of the mall. Marissa Ellenby, a spokesperson for Oakbrook Terrace told Chicago Tribune their scanning system does not access any other information and helps to mitigate parking, which Ellenby says has been an persistent complaint from customers.
Nevertheless, experts argue that Oakbrook Center's license plate scanning could raise concerns about personal privacy.
