OAK BROOK, IL --- The Oak Brook Fire Department is inviting residents to attend its upcoming Citizen's Fire Academy. Applications are now open for the academy's spring session, a free nine-week program that teaches such skills as fire suppression, CPR, and fire investigation.
The next Citizen's Fire Academy is set to begin on March 6 and is open to applicants who are 18 years of age or older. In addition to equipping residents with fire safety skills, the program also aims to "give participants insights into how firefighters/paramedics perform their duties, as well as how the Oak Brook Fire Department serves the community," according to information on the village's website.
During three-hour classes, participants will engage in interactive, hands-on exercises under the supervision of certified paramedics and firefighters. Some of the training exercises may involve lifting, crawling, or bending, but physical limitations will not exclude any applicants, officials said.
