Man Fires Gun Near School After Pot Deal Goes Bad: Cops

Police say the man fired a single shot because he was angry that he paid for marijuana he never got.

LOMBARD, IL — A Lombard man has been charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon after he allegedly fired a shot near a school while parents were waiting to pick up their children Tuesday afternoon. Police say Daniel Grayson, 41, of the first block of W. Ash Street, allegedly got angry during a pot deal gone bad and fired a single round into the ground roughly 350 feet from St. John's Lutheran School.

According to police, a resident saw Grayson fire at the ground at approximately 2:30 p.m. When police got to the scene, they say they found a shell casing on the ground. Parents of children who attend St. John's Lutheran reportedly told police they heard the gunshot.

After an investigation, police tracked down Grayson not far from the scene. They say he allegedly paid someone $50 for marijuana and then fired the shot when he didn't receive the drugs.

After the incident, Lombard Police Chief Roy Newton said in a statement, "On a day where we are all reminded about the safety of our nation, it is indeed disheartening to see an individual allegedly make a decision that could potentially put the lives of teachers, parents and their children in at risk."

Grayson was taken to DuPage County Jail and held on $20,000 bond. He is set to appear in court on Oct. 3.
